KUALA LUMPUR: A 54-year-old Malaysian man from Perak has been arrested at Chennai International Airport, India, after 4kg of hydroponic cannabis were found concealed in his luggage.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the man had boarded a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok to Chennai on Saturday (Aug 8).
"A search conducted by Chennai Customs on the man's luggage revealed hydroponic cannabis weighing 4kg concealed in his bag," he said when contacted on Tuesday.
Hussein said the man had no previous criminal record with Malaysian police and was currently detained by Chennai Customs. He said the man would be investigated under India's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985 pending trial.
"NCID will maintain continuous contact with India's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to obtain further details on the case and investigate the syndicate network involved," he said.
On Monday, an x-ray scan of the man's luggage revealed suspicious images, leading to the discovery of four packages containing greenish, lumpy material with a strong odour.
The packages were concealed in a specially made compartment at the bottom of the checked luggage, while a drug detection test confirmed the substance as cannabis, with a net weight of 4.033kg. - Bernama
