Five nabbed in RM200,000 graft probe involving Sandakan council staffers

KOTA KINABALU: Two engineers are among five people from the Sandakan municipal council arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with bribery cases totalling RM200,000.

It is learned that the bribes were allegedly received from a contractor to help secure council contracts.

The five, three men and two women aged between 30 and 50, have been remanded for seven days from Wednesday (July 23) by Sandakan Magistrate Yong Ching Hong following an application by the MACC.

The engineer, assistant engineer, two council employees and one former employee were arrested when they turned up at the MACC office in Sandakan at about 7pm on Tuesday (July 22).

Sabah MACC sources said investigations indicated that the five allegedly received bribes in their accounts from 2022 to this year.

Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests when contacted.

He said investigations were being conducted under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 for suspicion of taking bribes.
