A MAN from China stole a bicycle and cycled more than 1,000km to see the sea but he was arrested just miles before he could reach the port-city of Weifang, reported China Press.

The 30-year-old known as Wang from Anhui province stole the bicycle that was parked by the roadside in Huaibei city and embarked on a 23-day journey to fulfil his life-long dream of seeing the sea.

According to Huaibei city police, Wang cycled through Xuzhou in Jiangsu province, Linyi and Zaozhuang in Shandong province – which is more than 1,000km – before being nabbed in Weifang, which is also in Shandong.

It was reported that he is currently still under police custody.

Many Internet users were sympathetic towards Wang who came very close to achieving his dream.

“Could you please place him in a jail cell with a view of the sea?” one netizen quipped.

> The sale of air-conditioners in north-east China is going through the roof due to the prolonged heatwave, according to a report from China Press.

The Chinese daily said provinces such as Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning and eastern Inner Mongolia, all of which are colder regions in China, had never needed air-conditioners prior to the heatwave.

However, with some cities there reaching a high of 37°C due to the heatwave, there is now a mad rush to buy air-conditioners.

Data from Midea Group showed that air conditioner sales in Heilongjiang and Jilin have increased by 356% on a year-on-year basis.

“The heatwave came too suddenly, and demand shot up too quickly.

“Even though we’re urgently reallocating personnel and stock, we still can’t meet all customer needs,” a regional manager for a well known air-conditioner manufacturer said.
