A WOMAN who married multiple men for money to fuel her gambling addiction has been sentenced in Las Vegas after pleading guilty to bigamy and obtaining money under false pretences, China Press reported.

Jiaying Chen submitted 14 marriage applications, resulting in seven marriage certificates, while using false identities to deceive men into giving her money.

The 34-year-old was ordered to spend the first year of her probation in jail and repay about US$280,000 (RM1.14mil) to her victims.

> A Chinese national, whose two marriages overlapped for nearly seven years, was spared prosecution in Singapore after a judge questioned whether the court had jurisdiction over her second marriage in China.

Liu Mengwei, 33, married a Singaporean man in 2012 before returning to China, where she married another man in 2019 and had two children.

Her first marriage was only dissolved in October last year.

The prosecution withdrew the bigamy charge after the judge raised concerns over whether Singapore law applied to the overseas marriage.

The woman was issued a stern warning and the court granted a discharge amounting to an acquittal.
