BATU PAHAT: Special funds have been allocated to enhance safety at the school of murdered student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, which includes the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said that CCTVs would be installed in key areas around the school, including the school hall, canteen, selected classrooms and areas frequented by students.
"After speaking with Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the state government has agreed to fund the CCTV installation," he said, after visiting the school together with state executive councillor Ling Tian Soon.
Dr Wee, who is also MCA president, said that he and Ling, both local representatives in the area, would also allocate funds to enhance other safety amenities.
He said they would continue to work closely with the school administration to enhance prevention efforts and prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
"We hope these efforts will help create a safe environment for teachers and students in the school," he added.
Irene Sofiya, 16, was found dead in the school on Oct 3.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk AB Rahaman Arsad said jealousy and revenge were the motive behind her murder.
