Appointing top judges, proposal to ban vapes discussed by Rulers


KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of top judges and a proposal to ban vapes and e-cigarettes were among the topics discussed at the 269th meeting of the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara.

Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the meeting was chaired by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

In the meeting, which was held yesterday, the appointments of the Chief Justice, Court of Appeal president and Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as judges to the Federal Court, Court of Appeal and the High Court were discussed.

“Today, the meeting was presented with a briefing on national security by the Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and a briefing on the national defence by Chief of Defence Force Jen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar,” Syed Danial said.

“The conference also took note of a proposal to fully ban the sale and consumption of vapes or e-cigarettes in Malaysia,” he said.

The meeting was also informed about the need for refugees and asylum seekers to register their marriages in Malaysia, as well as the Cabinet’s proposed policy paper regarding the management of seized and forfeited assets.

The meeting was attended by the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah, Sultan of Kedah Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah and the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

Also present were the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, the Tunku Temenggong of Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim and the Tengku Arif Bendahara of Pahang Tengku Muhammad Iskandar Ri’ayatuddin Shah.

Others were the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Musa Aman and the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang Tun Ramli Ngah Talib.

The Rulers were accompanied to the meeting by their respective Mentri Besar, Chief Ministers and a representative of the Sarawak Premier.

On Tuesday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, attended the pre-council meeting of the Conference of Rulers.

The last meeting was held on Feb 5 and was chaired by Sultan Sallehuddin.
