PETALING JAYA: Bersatu Youth (Armada) has reaffirmed its support for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic), insisting the party president retains the grassroots mandate to lead the party.
Its information chief, Harris Idaham Rashid, dismissed a motion passed by the Port Dickson Bersatu division proposing a leadership transition that would see deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin take on a more prominent role.
“The motion by the Port Dickson division does not reflect the sentiments of the grassroots. It is merely a publicity stunt,” he said in a statement on Monday (7 July).
He added that the wing would defend the institution of the presidency against threats from both within and outside the party.
The motion, tabled at the division’s annual general meeting by its deputy chief Akkil Aizat Othman, suggested that Hamzah be made the party’s “main leader”, while vice-president Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin handles administrative matters.
It also proposed that Muhyiddin be appointed as an adviser and mentor, though it stopped short of explicitly calling for a change in the presidency.
The proposal comes amid recent speculation over possible changes within the Perikatan Nasional leadership. Reports had suggested that PAS proposed restructuring the coalition by appointing Hamzah to head an executive committee to oversee Perikatan’s daily operations, with party presidents taking on advisory roles while remaining on the Perikatan supreme council.
However, Hamzah dismissed the rumours as “nonsensical stories” aimed at sowing discord within Bersatu and Perikatan.
Muhyiddin also denied any attempt by PAS to replace him as Perikatan chairman, stating that PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had reaffirmed his support during a meeting several months ago.
