SAR ops saved over 1,000 lives at sea nationwide in 2024, says MMEA

PASIR PUTEH: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) conducted 226 search and rescue (SAR) operations throughout 2024, involving 1,348 victims nationwide.

Kelantan Maritime director, Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi said that out of the total, 1,259 victims were rescued, 64 were reported dead, and 25 were classified as missing.

He said the statistics demonstrate the efficiency and readiness of MMEA's assets in conducting emergency maritime operations.

"The annually celebrated Maritime Awareness and Safety Day also serves as a platform to educate maritime communities, including fishermen, tourists, and ocean operators on safety measures while at sea," he said.

Capt Erwan Shah said this during a press conference held in conjunction with the 2025 Maritime Awareness and Safety Day celebration at the Kelantan Maritime headquarters here Saturday (June 28).

He added that MMEA ensures at least one asset remains in a state of readiness in each state and maritime zone to be immediately deployed upon receiving an emergency report.

"This year, Maritime Malaysia is intensifying its sea safety awareness campaign through community talks, social media campaigns, leaflet distribution, dialogue sessions, safety exhibitions, and interviews on electronic media.

"These efforts are crucial to reducing the risk of loss of life and strengthening the relationship between enforcement agencies and coastal communities," he added. - Bernama
