Primed for emergencies

New communications system to enhance disaster preparedness

CYBERJAYA: An integrated mobile communications support system has been launched to enhance disaster preparedness during public emergencies and disaster situations.

Called the Mobile Integrated Radio and Internet Communication System, or PRIME, the system will support the efforts of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and rescuers during such situations.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who disclosed this, said the system was developed by MCMC to act as a strategic support system during emergency operations.

“PRIME is not just a vehicle, it is a moving integrated communications system that combines various technologies such as satellite, cellular, mobile radio, WiFi and drones,” he said when launching the system at MCMC’s Centre of Excellence here yesterday.

As a specially-outfitted vehicle, PRIME is equipped with satellite, cellular, two-way radio WiFi and drone technology to enable seamless and uninterrupted communication in remote areas with bad coverage.

Elaborating on the system, Fahmi said PRIME is capable of providing reliable and flexible communication connectivity according to operational requirements in challenging locations.

“In situations where communications is obstructed or limited, PRIME allows critical communication for rescue coordination, aid management and information delivery by related industries.

“This is important to ensure fast and effective response, even at remote places or areas with poor coverage,” he added.

Fahmi told reporters later that each PRIME unit costs RM1mil and the first unit will be tested during the northeast monsoon season this October.

He said the usage and effectiveness of PRIME will be monitored so that it can be improved from time to time.

So far, one PRIME vehicle has been deployed and two more will be developed in phases.

MCMC, in a statement, said the first PRIME vehicle will be placed at its headquarters to support operations in the peninsula.

“Two more units will be completed by the end of the year and will be placed at the MCMC office in Sabah and Sarawak,” it added.
