Malay rights rally goes ahead without incident, police to issue statement soon

KUALA LUMPUR: A rally for Malay rights in the city was carried out without incident on Saturday (May 24).

The rally, dubbed Himpunan Melayu Berdaulat, started at around 2pm.

Numerous participants, dressed in white, came to the Sogo Shopping Centre here to show solidarity over what has been perceived as threats to bumiputra rights and Islam.

About a dozen speakers from Malay rights groups spoke during the rally.

“If you feel afraid, disappointed or afraid, then go out to vote during the next general election.

“We always say that we are angry, but when the time comes, we don’t come out to vote. This is important for the preservation of the Malay powers,” Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) president Syed Hasan Syed Ali said during his speech.

The rally concluded at around 4.15pm.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, when met at the scene, said that a police statement on the rally will be issued soon.
