PETALING JAYA: The newly launched medical school in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, sets a fresh benchmark in training future healthcare professionals, with active partnerships with world-renowned institutions.
The Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School in Sunway University collaborates with prestigious institutions including Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, as well as the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford and Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, to integrate global expertise and excellence into its academic programmes.
Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO said professors from the prestigious institutions will be involved in teaching and marking the papers.
“We have a strong ecosystem here, and our goal is to train doctors who are future-ready.
“We’re incorporating sustainable development and planetary health into the programme to ensure they understand today’s global challenges and not just rely on traditional methods.
“With climate change and its growing impact, it is crucial that our future doctors know how to address these issues,” he said at the launch of the medical school at Sunway University.
Also present was Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who officiated the opening of the school.
Zambry said the initiative was in line with the government’s aim to make the country a global education hub.
“Currently, we host over 130,000 international students from 140 countries.
“Through Education Malaysia Global Services, we aim to increase these numbers by providing a high-quality academic environment,” he said.
Cheah said that a world-class university and medical centre are key elements of a thriving integrated township.
He added that Sunway Medical Centre is the largest private hospital in Malaysia and also the country’s first substantial private teaching and research hospital.
“Our latest development, called Sunway Square, located across from Sunway Medical Centre and Sunway University, will feature a purpose-built facility for the new medical school.
“You have my assurance that the Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School will be equipped with the latest technologies and state-of-the-art facilities,” he said.
