MACC refutes wrongdoing in Pamela Ling probe

PETALING JAYA: Claims of harassment against Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) have been challenged by the agency, which stated that all investigations were conducted lawfully.

As such, it said the allegations of harassment had no basis at all.

The MACC said it must be emphasised that at every stage, the body acted within the legal framework and obtained all necessary court orders and adhered to established procedures.

“The allegations of harassment or misconduct are unfounded. The judicial review filed by Pamela Ling prior to her disappearance does not negate or invalidate the ongoing investigation into the alleged offences.

“Legal challenges are the right of any individual but do not impede the enforcement process as provided by law,” the anti-graft agency said yesterday.

The MACC said police were now leading the investigation on her disappearance and that it was providing its full cooperation.

“Accordingly, the MACC urges all parties to refrain from speculation that could hinder the investigation or create confusion.

“At this stage, our shared priority should be to provide full cooperation to the authorities so that efforts to locate Pamela Ling can proceed smoothly, safely and as swiftly as possible,” it said.

On the timeline of investigation on the corruption and money laundering cases involving Pamela, the MACC said an investigation paper was opened on May 28 last year with an arrest warrant issued on Dec 2 after she failed to turn up at the MACC headquarters.

This led to her arrest in Singapore by the republic’s Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) during a joint operation this Jan 8.

The MACC said following her arrest, she was brought to the Putrajaya courts and remanded from Jan 9 to Jan 11 before being granted bail.

“On April 9, the MACC requested Pamela Ling to attend its headquarters to continue giving her statement following new information obtained by the commission.”

“Based on this information, the MACC also sought and obtained approval and an order from the DPP to retain Pamela Ling’s travel documents by serving her with a Notice of Surrender of Travel Documents under Section 44(1) of the MACC Act 2009.

“However, Pamela Ling failed to attend on that day, and her lawyer subsequently lodged a police report regarding her disappearance on the same day,” it said.

In a statement yesterday, lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said Pamela had filed a judicial review application against the MACC just two days before her alleged abduction.

The lawyer representing Pamela’s family claimed that the latter had been subjected to a “sustained and systematic campaign of pressure” by the MACC during the course of its investigations.

“She had attended the MACC on no fewer than nine occasions and cooperated fully, and was never charged with any offence.

“Despite this, she remained under an unexplained travel ban since at least October 2024, with an order to report to the MACC monthly,” Sangeet said.

She said the judicial review application alleged that the MACC exerted pressure on Pamela to resolve private disputes with her estranged husband, rather than for legitimate purposes.

It also alleged that Pamela had been arrested and remanded without legal basis and that she had been subjected to the travel ban without explanation despite full compliance with MACC requirements.
