Fisherman who fell overboard while gathering cockles found drowned


NIBONG TEBAL: The fisherman who fell from his boat while shovelling cockles under the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge, or Penang Second Bridge, has been found drowned.

The body of Ismail Ahmad, 28, was found near a fish cage at Sungai Udang here at 9.40am on Friday (May 2).

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said a search and rescue operation was mounted on Thursday (May 1) to look for the victim.

"We conducted a water surface search during the operation," he said in a statement on Friday (May 2).

He said the SAR operation continued on Friday with the participation of five vessels searching different sectors, coordinated by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The local fishermen's association and Bomba's Water Rescue Unit.

He said the victim's body was then taken to the Batu Musang Jetty and handed over to the police for further action.

On Thursday, it was reported that a fisherman was believed to have drowned after falling overboard while shovelling cockles under the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge at the 4.2km mark.

It is understood that at the time of the incident, the victim was alone in his boat while his father and a friend were in another vessel.

The incident occurred when the victim's boat hit a bridge pillar, causing him to fall overboard.
