Response to US tariffs tops agenda of May 5 Dewan sitting

PETALING JAYA: The government’s multi-ministry response to new United States’ tariffs and a review of certain industrial policies are among the highlights of the May 5 special parliamentary sitting.

The sitting will also feature the government’s strategy to coordinate short and medium-term solutions to deal with any economic impact from the tariffs which had been announced by the United States but is currently paused for 90 days.

It will begin at 11am on May 5 at the Parliament Building and will include briefings from the ministries under Standing Order 14(1)(i), said Parliament’s Corporate Communications Division.

The country’s long-term economic plan to deal with the impact of international trade wars to ensure Malaysia’s future economic resilience will also be discussed, the division said in a statement yesterday.

“Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has also allowed Members of Parliament to seek clarification and share their views (on the matter) during this sitting.

“This session is expected to provide space for constructive debate and transparent communication to the public regarding the government’s steps in tackling the current global economic challenges.”

The division added that the meeting was convened at the request of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in accordance with Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat.

Malaysians can tune in to the live broadcast of the special meeting on the Parliament’s official YouTube channel.
