PETALING JAYA: The special parliamentary meeting on May 5 will discuss the long-term planning for dealing with the United States’ imposition of retaliatory tariffs on all imports into the country and its effect on the economy.
Parliament Malaysia’s Corporate Communications Division said the meeting will begin at 11am on May 5 at the Parliament Building and would also include briefings from Ministers under Standing Order 14(1)(i).
It would also include the government’s multi-ministry and multi-sector response, including the coordination of short and medium-term solutions, and a review of certain industrial policies.

The country’s long-term economic plan to deal with the impact of international trade wars, to ensure Malaysia’s economic resilience in the future, will also be briefed.
“Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has also allowed Members of Parliament to seek clarification and share their views during the briefing session.

“This session is expected to provide space for constructive debate and transparent communication to the public regarding the government's steps in tackling the current global economic challenges,” it said in a statement on Thursday (April 24).
The division added that the meeting was convened at the request of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and in accordance with Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat.

This Standing Order allows the Dewan Rakyat to convene and deliberate on pressing current issues that affect and benefit the people.
