PETALING JAYA: The Parliamentary Special Select Committee reviewing the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 on separating the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and Public Prosecutor is targeting to finalise the Bill and discuss proposed amendments at its final meeting on May 18, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
In a statement after chairing the meeting on Tuesday (May 5), the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said the committee also listened to presentations from the AG's Chambers on proposed amendments.
"The Madani administration remains committed to ensuring that the process of separating the roles of the AG and Public Prosecutor is carried out carefully guided by principle and in accordance with the Constitution, in line with efforts to strengthen the doctrine of separation of powers and enhance public confidence in the national justice system," she said.
According to Azalina, the meeting was also attended by various MPs including Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong), William Leong (PH-Selayang), Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi), Roy Angau Gingkoi (GPS-Lubok Antu), Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor), Datuk Lo Su Fui (GRS-Tawau) and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar).
She added that Adly Zahari (PH-Alor Gajah), Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) and Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) were unable to attend due to unavoidable factors.
Earlier in 2026, Azalina told the Dewan Rakyat that the proposed constitutional amendments would be referred to a special select committee.
When tabling the Bill for its second reading, she said the committee would examine the Bill, including accountability mechanisms for the Public Prosecutor and propose any necessary amendments.
She also said the committee would prepare a statement containing the proposed amendments to the Bill within three months.
