Special Select Committee to review separation of powers Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed constitutional amendment that seeks to separate the roles of the attorney general and public prosecutor will be referred to a Special Select Committee, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said the committee would examine the Bill including the accountability mechanism for the public prosecutor, and propose any necessary amendments.

She added that the committee would then prepare a statement containing proposed amendments to the Bill within three months.

"The Special Select Committee may extend the period if necessary," she said when tabling the motion for second reading in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (March 3).

The motion to refer the Bill to the committee was then approved by a majority vote.
