KUALA LUMPUR: The investigation paper on the erroneous depiction of the Jalur Gemilang on Sin Chew Daily’s front page has been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) for further action, says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
The Inspector-General of Police said initial investigations revealed the newspaper attributed the mistake to a technical error, but any subsequent action will depend on the AGC’s decision.
“We referred the investigation paper on Friday. The AGC is currently reviewing it, and if they instruct us to update any part of it, we will comply,” he said yesterday.
So far, police have recorded statements from 54 individuals and will continue calling in additional witnesses if necessary, added Razarudin.
On Thursday, Sin Chew Daily executive editor-in-chief Chan Aun Kuang and deputy chief sub-editor Tsai Shwu San were detained after being summoned to Bukit Aman to provide statements.
Both were released on police bail the same night.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 and Section 3(1)(c) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963.
Sin Chew Daily has suspended Chan and Tsai, citing accountability.
The newspaper stated the decision took immediate effect and would remain in place until investigations are concluded.
Following strong public backlash, the publication issued an apology, stating that the mistake was a technical error and unintentional.
It also said internal action would be taken against those responsible after a rebuke from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
