Kelantan fireman facing action over offensive social media post

PETALING JAYA: A Fire and Rescue Department personnel in Kelantan will face disciplinary action for making offensive political comments on his social media account.

Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department director Farhan Sufyan Borhan said the 40-year-old officer had been investigated.

"He has been issued a warning but no action has been taken yet. We are waiting for feedback from headquarters.

"The department will remind officers and personnel to be more careful when making comments on social media," Sinar Harian reported Farhan as saying during a press conference at the Kelantan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Hari Raya open house in Tok Bali on Thursday night (April 17).

He said officers and personnel are encouraged to be active on social media but must be careful, especially on issues involving race, religion and royalty (3R) as well as government policies.

"As civil servants, they are bound by the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said.

Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad had previously said social media is a good platform for sharing information but all officers and personnel must comply with set guidelines.

Nor Hisham said 18 personnel had received warning letters and one auxiliary firefighter suspended for three months for breaching social media use ethics over the past two years.
