TAPAH: MCA is ramping up its outreach for the Ayer Kuning by-election, and the response from Chinese voters has been positive, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng.

“The locals are friendly, many of them said they would support our candidate, but we must continue to work hard,” said the party’s vice-president.

He said the campaign has been in full swing since nomination day, with MCA machinery working tirelessly to engage with voters.

“We want to ensure that the voters understand the issues and come out to vote for Barisan Nasional candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir,” he added.

Wee said MCA and Barisan’s campaign teams are focusing on traditional methods such as door-to-door visits and distributing pamphlets to reach out to the people.

“In places like Kampung Baru Coldstream, we have seen a fairly positive response, but we cannot take things lightly because every vote is crucial.

“We will continue our outreach efforts by assigning local leaders to specific areas to maintain close contact with voters.

“The key is to reach every possible corner and connect with as many voters as we can,” he told reporters during a walkabout with Mohamad Yusri at Kampung Baru Pekan Getah near here yesterday.

With nine days to polling, Wee said MCA would carry on its efforts with full commitment and responsibility to secure the coalition’s success.

Mohamad Yusri is contesting against Perikatan Nasional’s Abd Muhaimin Malek and Parti Sosialis Malaysia deputy secretary-general KS Bawani.

The by-election was called after the Umno incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin, 58, died on Feb 22.

Polling is set for April 26, with early voting on April 22.

In the 2022 general election, Ishsam garnered 9,088 votes to win by a majority of 2,213 votes.
