Umno an essential partner in every ruling coalition, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno remains a crucial party needed by all coalitions to form the Federal Government, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Umno deputy president said the party, while no longer as dominant as before, continues to play a part in nearly every government formed in recent years.

“This proves that in Malaysian politics, Umno remains an essential complement and balance to national stability,” he said in his speech when officiating Umno’s 80th anniversary celebration held at the World Trade Centre on Saturday (May 2).

Mohamad stressed that the party’s role goes beyond being a supporting force, describing it as a catalyst for reforms, economic development and public welfare.

“Umno is not merely a complement. We are a driver of various reform agendas, economic development and the well-being of the rakyat,” he said.

Reflecting on the party’s trajectory since 2018, he acknowledged that Umno had faced numerous internal challenges but had managed them prudently.

“Differences were handled with wisdom, and the continuity of the party has always been prioritised,” he said.

He added that Umno representatives in government have demonstrated credible and effective performance, adding that the party leads several key and strategic ministries.

“This is because not many within the unity government possess as much experience in governing as Umno representatives,” he said.

Mohamad also took a swipe at political rivals who had previously written off the party, suggesting that some had instead undermined themselves.

“In life, one must be careful with words. What goes around comes around,” he said, adding that Umno would remain focused on strengthening itself rather than responding to critics.

He said the party is now moving towards a more inclusive approach through the “Rumah Bangsa” concept introduced by its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, aimed at welcoming back former members and attracting new supporters.

“Those who have left, those who were sidelined and those who wish to return - we open the space for all,” he said.

Mohamad said Umno also invites non-governmental organisations, intellectuals, the younger generation and Malays from all backgrounds who wish to contribute to the community.

“Anyone who identifies as Malay and wants to contribute to the struggle of the bangsa, we invite them to be part of our reform movement and political platform,” he added.
