Ayer Kuning polls: State seat contest kicks off with nominations

TAPAH: The battle for the Ayer Kuning state seat begins on Saturday (April 12) with the nomination of candidates at Dewan Merdeka here.

Each prospective candidate has to submit their nomination forms from 9am to 10am before returning officer Ahmad Redhauddin Ahmad Shokori announces those eligible to contest.

Once the nomination process is complete, candidates have 14 days to campaign for the state constituency seat, one of two under the Tapah parliamentary constituency.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast rain on nomination day.

According to an Election Commission (EC) source, seven nomination forms for the Ayer Kuning by-election have been sold as of 11 am on Friday (April 11).

So far, Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional, and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) have each announced their respective candidates to contest the seat.

Barisan has named Umno Tapah secretary Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, 54, as its candidate representing the unity government.

Perikatan will field its Tapah division chief Abdul Muhaimin Malek, 44, while PSM's deputy secretary-general Bawani KS, 40, will contest.

Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said 778 officers and personnel would be on duty on nomination day.

The Ayer Kuning state by-election is being held following the death of its incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin, 58, on Feb 25.

The EC has set the polling day for the state by-election on April 26, while early voting is on April 22.
