PUTRAJAYA: Taxi operators who already have existing vehicles or have failed to secure hire-purchase financing under the National Madani Taxi Renewal Programme are still allowed to licence or replace their vehicles with models other than the Proton S70 offered under the programme.
The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) said participation in the Madani Taxi programme was voluntary and existing taxis that were not replaced under the programme could continue operating until they reached the prescribed maximum vehicle age.
“Taxi drivers are encouraged to switch to Madani Taxi to enjoy the various incentives offered under the programme.
“However, applicants who already have an existing vehicle or are unsuccessful in obtaining hire-purchase financing approval under the Madani Taxi programme are still allowed to licence or replace their vehicle with a model other than the Proton S70 Madani Taxi,” it said in a statement Friday (Aug 7)
The agency said the Transport Ministry had issued a policy decision on April 23 regarding new applications and taxi replacements under the programme.
Under the policy, new applications for or replacement of taxis under the Madani Taxi programme were voluntary and limited to the purchase of the Proton S70 taxi package offered under the initiative.
The Madani Taxi programme was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 3 as part of efforts to improve the country’s taxi services, in line with measures announced under Budget 2026.
APAD said existing taxis that were not replaced under the programme would continue to be allowed to operate until the end of their prescribed vehicle lifespan.
