Penang police corporal succumbs to head injuries


GEORGE TOWN: The police corporal who accidentally shot himself in the head has died from his injuries.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the death of Koperal A. Francis, 58, was confirmed at 5.12pm at the general intensive care unit of Penang Hospital.

"The deceased had previously suffered serious head injuries after he accidentally shot himself on Tuesday (April 8)," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Comm Hamzah, his wife and the staff of the state police contingent extended their condolences to the family of the deceased.

"May they remain strong in facing the trials and circumstances," he said.

On Tuesday (April 8), the 58-year-old corporal who was attached to the camp commandant branch at the state police headquarters was found severely wounded on the head at the guard post of the police headquarters at about 6.12pm.

The victim was rushed to Penang Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.

On Thursday, the deceased was transferred to the general intensive care unit at Penang Hospital.

An investigation at the scene revealed that a single shot was fired from the weapon used by the victim.

The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960.
