Corporal shot in the head moved to general ICU, says Penang police chief

GEORGE TOWN: A police corporal who accidentally shot himself in the head has been transferred to the general intensive care unit at Penang Hospital.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the policeman is under the supervision of specialists.

"So far, no operation has been performed. He is still under observation,' he said on Thursday (April 10).

Comm Hamzah added that police have recorded his ex-wife’s statement to investigate the incident.

On speculation that the victim has a debt burden potentially causing problems with his family, Comm Hamzah said the matter was still under investigation.

"It is still premature to conclude the cause of the incident," he said.

He added that the police’s current standard procedure for firearm usage is also sufficient.

On Tuesday (April 8), the 58-year-old corporal who was attached to the camp commandant branch at the state police headquarters was found severely wounded on the head at the guard post of the police headquarters at about 6.12pm.

The victim was rushed to Penang Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.

An investigation at the scene revealed that a single shot was fired from the weapon used by the victim.

The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960.
