Selangor police: Friday prayer suspect acted over traffic frustration

SHAH ALAM: Investigations into the arrest of a 46-year-old man for disobedience of the Sultan of Selangor’s order regarding Friday prayers found that he was unhappy about traffic congestion, police say.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar on Tuesday (April 28) said investigations found no evidence of external influence.

“The suspect is now under remand.

“Initial investigations found that the suspect’s actions were mainly driven by dissatisfaction with traffic congestion, for example, during Friday prayers.”

“So far, the suspect’s actions appear to be isolated and do not involve any external parties. However, investigations are ongoing, and we are examining all aspects, including the possibility of other factors,” he said.

On Sunday (April 26), the 46-year-old local man was arrested in Pandan Indah, Ampang, to assist with investigations into a case of defiance of the Sultan of Selangor’s decree concerning the conduct of Friday prayers and the azan (call to prayer).

The arrest was made at about 3pm following a police report lodged by residents and the surau’s committee members over a petition raised in the residential area.

Previously, the surau committee in Ampang lodged a report with the Pandan Indah police station following allegations that certain parties had objected to the management of the place of worship, including the call to prayer (azan), congregational prayers, and the use of the surau’s outdoor space.

Among the issues that caused tension were claims that the call to prayer was disturbing them and requests that congregational prayers be stopped.
