PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Guangxi, a southern Chinese province, are exploring partnership opportunities, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and the digital economy.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that both sides also exchanged views on strengthening bilateral trade.
“Malaysia aims to become a regional AI leadership hub, and we invite leading Chinese AI companies to consider setting up their regional headquarters here,” he wrote on Facebook after a meeting with Guangxi Governor Lan Tianli and his delegation here on Thursday (April 10).
Anwar said the visit reflected the deep and longstanding relationship between Malaysia and China, especially with Guangxi being an important regional partner.
He also expressed anticipation for the arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will be visiting Malaysia next week.
In his post, Anwar also highlighted the successful partnership between the two nations in the “Two Countries, Twin Parks” project, which involves the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park in Pahang and the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park in Guangxi.
“So far, 19 projects involving RM25.68bil have been approved under the initiative, which aims to create over 10,000 jobs.
"To date, RM20.77bil has been realised, resulting in 7,572 jobs.
“This clearly shows the significant benefits of the cooperation for Malaysia’s economy and workforce,” he added.
Anwar noted that China has remained Malaysia’s largest trading partner for the 16th consecutive year in 2024, with total trade reaching US$106.04bil (RM484.12bil).
“Guangxi, as China’s gateway to Asean, plays a key role in facilitating bilateral trade and investment,” he said.
Anwar expressed hope that Malaysia-China diplomatic ties would continue to mature and remain strong to face the challenges ahead.
