PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and the Maldives are strengthening cooperation in addressing shared global challenges, particularly climate change and rising sea levels that threaten the fisheries and agriculture sectors.
In a statement on Monday, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) said Malaysia welcomed the Maldives’ innovative renewable energy initiatives, including its exploration of ocean thermal energy as an alternative to solar power limitations. Malaysia also took note of the Maldives’ sustainable fishing practices.
The matter was discussed during a courtesy call by Maldives High Commissioner to Malaysia Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed on Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh in Putrajaya on Monday (May 25).
"Both sides also agreed on the urgent need to develop climate-resilient infrastructure and strengthen coral reef conservation efforts amid rising ocean temperatures,” the ministry said.
To support technology sharing and green solutions, Malaysia has invited the Maldives delegation to participate in the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) this October at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
Held under the theme "Race Towards Net Zero”, IGEM will serve as a platform to showcase smart island infrastructure innovations and explore bilateral business opportunities.
NRES said it remained committed to supporting regional and international initiatives aimed at advancing global environmental sustainability for shared prosperity. – Bernama
