Soldier claims trial to punching woman in traffic incident

SEREMBAN: A 35-year-old soldier claimed trial at the Magistrate's Court here to a charge of punching a female driver following a minor traffic incident.

Abdul Hafiz Abu Bakar pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Syed Farid Syed Ali.

He was charged with committing the offence against the 28-year-old woman around 10.20pm on March 29 at Taman Satria in Senawang.

Abdul Hafiz was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or a maximum fine of RM2,000 or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Ezzati Mohd Zainal then asked the court to set bail at RM2,000.

However, the accused who was represented by Chrysandy Lai from the Legal Aid Department asked for a lower amount.

She said the accused was not a flight risk as he held a permanent job.

The accused also had to provide for his two young children and parents, she added.

Syed Farid then set bail at RM2,000 with one surety and fixed May 19 for next mention.

According to media reports, the victim suffered bruising on her right rib and swelling on the back of her head due to the alleged assault.

The incident occurred when the woman who was driving a sedan, failed to avoid the man's wife, 34, and their seven-year-old daughter, who suddenly crossed the road, resulting in minor injuries to both.

A 22-second video, which shows the suspect attacking the female driver, went viral on social media.
