Mixing and matching attire for a polished look

KUALA LUMPUR: Wearing footwear that complements traditional attire is not just a matter of style but also a sign of respect for cultural heritage.

Fashion designers and celebrities say that selecting the right footwear to match a baju Melayu or baju kurung enhances the overall appearance of the traditional outfit.

Fashion designer Hatta Dolmat says that men wearing baju Melayu should opt for capal (traditional sandals) or formal shoes like Oxfords.

The capal, which has been traditionally worn with Malay attire for generations, remains relevant in modern times and continues to be a preferred choice for those who want their outfit to look authentic.

“Capal is not ordinary footwear; it symbolises heritage and cultural identity. When someone chooses to wear capal with baju Melayu, it signifies respect for tradition,” he told Bernama.

But with changing times, he said, modern sandals that are well made and of good quality can also be an alternative as long as they do not appear too casual or inappropriate for festive occasions.

Hatta said women have a wider variety of footwear choices, including low-heeled shoes or more formal sandals, which are often preferred when wearing baju kurung.

However, wearing slippers, especially Japanese-style flip-flops, can diminish the elegance of the overall look.

“To look neat, it is best to avoid overly casual slippers,” the fashion designer added.
