GEORGE TOWN: A fire engulfed the former iconic Odeon cinema, which has been turned into a nightlife entertainment spot.

The famous theatre in the heart of the city caught fire earlier on Saturday (May 30) night, with the blaze razing the iconic building that still features an Odeon sign.

The Fire and Rescue Department is currently working to put out the flames.

Well known for featuring both Western and Asian films throughout the decades, the Odeon building was a much celebrated cinema before shutting down more than a decade ago.

Over the years, it changed hands multiple times and was eventually turned into an entertainment joint.
