Motorcyclist nabbed for alleged assault on car driver

MELAKA: A 27-year-old motorcyclist has been arrested for assaulting a car driver with a helmet following a traffic dispute.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said that officers from the Batang Tiga police station arrested the suspect at 12.30pm on Friday ( March 29).

He added that the police had reviewed a 17-second video uploaded to Facebook, which showed the suspect, a trader, striking a 52-year-old man with a helmet, where the impact caused the victim to collapse on the road.

"The incident occurred at the junction leading into Taman Cheng Utama here on Thursday (March 27).

"It is believed the incident resulted from an earlier disagreement over a traffic issue," he said on Saturday (March 29).

ACP Christopher Patit said the victim has since provided a statement at the Melaka Tengah police headquarters before being referred to Melaka Hospital for further treatment.

He said that police would confiscate the suspect’s motorcycle and helmet as part of the investigation.

"We urge motorists to remain calm while driving, especially during the upcoming festive season, when traffic congestion is expected to increase," he said.
