More than 500 tonnes of solid waste including damaged mattresses and cabinets are expected to be dumped due to the recent floods in Johor.

JOHOR BARU: More than 500 tonnes of solid waste, including damaged mattresses and cabinets, are expected to be dumped due to the Johor floods.

SWM Environment Sdn Bhd corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said more than 250 tonnes of solid waste have been collected across five days starting last Friday (March 21) so far.

“The waste, mostly consisting of mattresses, cabinets and bed frames, were collected in areas like Johor Baru, Iskandar Puteri, Kota Tinggi, Kulai and Kluang.

“We expect to collect up to 500 tonnes of solid waste as clean-up works continue in the next few days,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 26).

Meanwhile, the Johor disaster management committee reported that a total of 275 families are still housed in 10 temporary flood relief centres in the state.

As of 8am on Wednesday, a total of 909 evacuees in Batu Pahat and Pontian were unable to return home.

A flood evacuee was given assistance at the SK Seri Comel tenporary relief centre in Batu Pahat.

“The figure remains unchanged since Tuesday evening. The victims are sheltered in five relief centres in Batu Pahat and Pontian each until the situation improves,” the report stated.

The committee also said that no continuous rain is forecasted for Wednesday as the skies are clear statewide except for Pontian, where it is cloudy in the morning.

The continuous downpour last Wednesday (March 19) flooded parts of Johor, forcing more than 11,000 people to evacuate to relief centres over the following days.

The situation has improved gradually as the waters receded, with many returning to their homes.
