PUTRAJAYA: The Energy Commission (ST) reminds the public to prioritise electrical and gas safety ahead of the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
In a statement Wednesday (March 26), the ST advised homeowners to ensure the safety of their electrical wiring by regularly testing the residual current device (RCD) by pressing the "T" test button at least once a month.
"If the RCD is functioning properly, it will trip, immediately cutting off the electricity supply. If it does not work, seek the services of an electrical contractor registered with ST to replace it," read the statement.
Additionally, ST emphasised the importance of inspecting electrical appliance cords to ensure they are not torn or exposed before use.
The commission also urged the public to only use electrical appliances and decorative lights with the ST-SIRIM safety label.
As an added precaution, all unused electrical switches and appliances should be turned off when leaving home for balik kampung or vacations, it said.
The public is also reminded to avoid overloading electrical sockets by using too many appliances at once. Additionally, festive decorations should not be hung on electric poles, and mobile phones should not be used while charging.
For gas safety, ST advises the public to ensure that gas stoves are in good condition by using cooking appliances with the ST-SIRIM safety label and ensuring proper ventilation in the cooking area.
"If you detect the smell of gas in the kitchen, immediately open windows or doors for ventilation.
"Avoid using any equipment or fittings that could cause ignition, do not switch electrical appliances on or off, and check for gas leaks using a gas detector or soap bubbles. Any leaks should be repaired immediately," the statement read.
ST also warns against leaving gas stoves unattended while in use and advises consumers to close the gas cylinder valve when leaving home for balik kampung or vacations.
"For any piped gas repair work at home, always seek the services of a gas contractor registered with ST," it added. - Bernama
