Floods: All remaining evacuees in Beaufort head home


KOTA KINABALU: The last 138 displaced residents sheltering at the Dewan Selagon relief centre in Beaufort were allowed to return home on Tuesday (Mar 25).

The flood victims, from 41 families across eight villages, packed up their belongings after Beaufort district officer Mohd Nazri Ajun officially declared the relief centre closed at noon.

Most had been staying at the centre for the past few days after intermittent heavy rain submerged their low-lying villages.

“Following recommendations and assessments by the Kinabatangan District Disaster Committee, based on field monitoring conducted by the district police, Fire and Rescue Department, and Civil Defence Force, I hereby declare the closure of the SK Sukau relief centre,” said Mohd Nazri.

He added that the centre, which was activated on March 22, was closed after an inspection confirmed the affected residents’ homes were safe for reoccupation.

These were the last flood victims in Sabah to return home, from hundreds who were affected by the third wave of floods this year.
