JOHOR BARU: The northeast monsoon continues to impact Johor, with five districts still affected by floods, says the state Disaster Management Committee.
The committee added that as at 6pm Sunday (March 23), there was a slight improvement in the situation with over 4,200 victims from 1,356 families currently housed in 29 active temporary relief centers (PPS).
“The overall trend indicates a gradual decline in the number of affected victims, down from 4,597 recorded earlier in the day. However, authorities remain on high alert.
“Johor Baru remains the worst-hit district, with 2,736 victims housed in 13 relief centers, followed by Pontian, where 579 victims are seeking shelter in seven centres,” the committee said in a statement here on Sunday (March 23).
The committee added that 525 victims have been relocated to five relief centres in Kluang while Batu Pahat and Kota Tinggi have 336 and 90 victims at two PPS each, respectively.
“Emergency response teams, including the Civil Defense Force (APM) and other agencies, continue to assist affected communities, with evacuation efforts ongoing in low-lying and high-risk areas.
“According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), heavy rainfall is expected to hit Johor later today,” it said.
The committee also said that the Drainage and Irrigation Department reported that several rivers, including Sungai Johor in Kota Tinggi and Sungai Lenik in Batu Pahat, remain at critical levels.
They urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official updates with no fatalities reported so far.
