Johor floods: MP calls for immediate study on Sungai Skudai


JOHOR BARU: The study on improving Sungai Skudai should be expedited immediately following the major floods that hit Johor Baru, says Pulai MP Suhaizan Kaiat.

He added that in December 2024, the federal government had approved an allocation of RM99.8mil for the Sungai Skudai improvement project in the area.

“I have voiced out in the Dewan Rakyat many times about the condition of Sungai Skudai. I am grateful to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for approving the allocation in efforts to work on the river.

“I have been told that from the allocation, about RM10mil is meant for research work on Sungai Skudai and a detailed report on what can be done to improve the river,” he said when met during a visit to Taman Tampoi Indah here on Sunday (March 23).

Suhaizan added that due to extensive development over the years, Sungai Skudai has become shallow and narrow causing frequent flash floods to hit residential areas near the river.

“Sungai Skudai crosses Kulai, Iskandar Puteri and Pulai for a length of 43 kilometres, starting with a tributary in Kampung Sedenak and ending in front of Kampung Bakar Batu in Perling here.

“The study is supposed to be carried out this year by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) where the project will start by 2026. However, following the floods, I do hope that the study can be carried out immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Suhaizan said that his service centre has allocated RM1,000 each to 15 community leaders living in flood-affected areas in his constituency.

He added that the allocation was to help affected communities carry out gotong royong in clearing and cleaning up their respective residential areas in the aftermath of floods.
