KOTA KINABALU: Foreign missions, including embassies and high commissions in Malaysia, should be updated on the improving security situation in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) so they can review and potentially ease travel advisories, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said the positive security developments, particularly the absence of any kidnap-for-ransom cases since January 2020, should be clearly communicated to the international community.
“This will boost the confidence of international tourists and encourage more visitors to Sabah, especially to the many attractive destinations along the east coast,” Hajiji said after co-chairing the Esszone Joint Committee meeting with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail here yesterday.
He said the overall security situation in Esszone remained stable and under control.
“I recently visited six islands in Sabah waters to inspect security posts and assess the operational readiness of personnel on the ground.”
Hajiji described the absence of kidnap-for-ransom incidents since 2020 as a significant achievement, crediting security forces and agencies for their efforts.
“I would like to express my highest appreciation to Esscom, the police, the Armed Forces, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and all security agencies for their commitment and sacrifices in safeguarding eastern Sabah.”
He added that the state government would continue working closely with the Home Ministry and relevant agencies to strengthen operational capabilities, enhance assets and preparedness and improve the welfare of security personnel.
Also present were state secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman and Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Awang Alik Jeman.
