Man killed, five injured in house fire


MELAKA: A 59-year-old man died while five others were injured when their two-storey house at Lorong Bandar Hilir 3 in Banda Hilir here caught fire.

Tan Kim Hock from Segamat, Johor, is believed to have been trapped inside the house in the early morning fire yesterday.

Melaka Senior Fire Officer II (operations) commander Suhaimi Atan said a distress call was received at 3.58am and a fire engine was dispatched from the Melaka Tengah station.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found that 70% of the house had been ravaged and all the victims were on the upper floor.

“One victim managed to escape while four others were rescued by the team.

“However, a 59-year-old male victim could not be saved and was found lifeless inside the house,” he said in a statement.

All injured victims – four men and a woman – are aged between 50 and 76.

All victims are currently being treated at Hospital Melaka.

Suhaimi said the blaze also destroyed three vehicles.

The firefighting operation was led by the Melaka Tengah station with reinforcement from the Padang Temu station and involved 20 personnel.
