Melaka SMEs urged to harness multicultural strength amid global headwinds

MELAKA: Local entrepreneurs can navigate the uncertainties of the global economy by leveraging the state's multicultural strength to access broader markets, says Patric Chang.

The newly installed Chairman of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Entrepreneurship Association of Melaka expressed that the Middle East crisis and the weakening global economy have affected local businesses. However, he assured that these challenges would not diminish the resilience of local entrepreneurs.

"I must acknowledge that we are affected by the crisis, but I am confident that we will overcome it, as Malaysians possess remarkable talent."

"Due to our diverse racial composition, we are capable of managing this crisis,” he stated, following the installation ceremony of the association held at a Chinese restaurant in Ayer Keroh on Friday, May 22.

Also present at the event were Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka, Khoo Poay Tiong; Chairman of Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Berhad (Kojadi), Senator Datuk Koh Nai Kwong; and Dr Chin Chee Seong, the national chairman of the SME Association.

Chang emphasised that Malaysians' ability to engage with diverse communities and markets is an advantage in navigating economic challenges.

"We hope that the government will continue to support SME entrepreneurs during these difficult times."

"On our part, we will persist in strengthening the state's economy by collaborating closely with various racial groups," he added.

In the meantime, Khoo highlighted that SMEs remain the backbone of the economy, significantly contributing to employment, innovation, and community development.

He also stated that the government continues to acknowledge the vital role SMEs play in propelling Malaysia’s economic growth.

"Several initiatives and policies have been introduced to support SMEs, including grants for digitalisation, incentives for automation, easier access to financing, export assistance, and training programs designed to help local businesses remain competitive in today’s challenging environment,” he affirmed during his speech at the event.

Khoo further mentioned that the government is also focused on strengthening the digital economy and encouraging more SMEs to adopt technology and e-commerce platforms to expand their businesses.
