KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu's roads are set to experience congestion with an influx of up to 80,000 vehicles expected from March 28 in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Terengganu Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Mohd Zamri Samion said main highways and federal roads in the state are expected to be congested during the peak period on March 29 and 30.
He said JPJ would step up monitoring and patrolling to ensure smooth traffic and the safety of road users, including conducting non-stop patrols over the period.
"A 24-hour (traffic) operation will also be conducted on March 29 and 30, in line with the driving ban on goods vehicles," he said when contacted on Tuesday (March 18).
Mohd Zamri said Terengganu JPJ would also place personnel at strategic spots and accident-prone areas to monitor traffic, disperse congestion and identify motorists who violate traffic rules.
He also said he was anticipating another wave of congestion on April 5 and 6 when most motorists leave the state after Hari Raya celebrations, adding that the Terengganu JPJ would adopt the same strategy for the safety of road users.
On Monday (March 17) Kelantan JPJ director Mohd Misuari Abdullah said more than two million vehicles are expected to enter the state from March 24 to April 8 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. – Bernama
