Couple dies in highway collision

BATU PAHAT: A young couple was killed in a collision involving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a car on the North-South Expressway near Yong Peng.

Batu Pahat district police chief Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the accident occurred at around 6.30am on Saturday (March 15) at KM 128.3 of the highway northbound.

"The initial investigations by the Batu Pahat Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division found both vehicles were heading north when the car in front lost control and veered into the road divider," he said.

"The car spun and came to a stop across the middle of the road before it was hit by the SUV, which could not avoid the collision," he added on Sunday (March 16).

The crash claimed the lives of the car’s driver, Mohamad Shahrul Nizam Mohd Ali, 24, and his wife, Norsuhada Kartika Razak, 23, who sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple was from Taman Kota Jaya, Kota Tinggi, Johor.

Meanwhile, the 50-year-old local man driving the SUV sustained chest injuries and is receiving treatment at Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
