PBM sets sights on expanding its reach

PETALING JAYA: Despite holding just a single parliamentary seat, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) says it is determined to make its presence felt in the local political scene.

Its information chief Saarah Ali Bashah said the party was banking on its inclusive leadership, grassroots outreach and ambitious plans for expansion, including its participation in the Sabah state elections this year.

She said the Sarawak-based party took pride in having one of the most diverse leadership structures in the country, with women making up 30% of the party’s leadership, while persons with disabilities (OKU) held 10% of leadership positions.

“One of our main pillars is to elevate the role of women in politics. In PBM, we have women leading divisions, regions and even states - positions traditionally held by men in other parties,” she said in an interview after a visit to Menara Star here yesterday.

Also present were PBM vice-president and Selangor chairman Mohd Hedrhin Ramli, deputy information chief Krishna Govinth and the party’s Selangor treasurer Muhamad Azman.

PBM’s journey has not been without turbulence, with the party previously facing a leadership dispute but Mohd Hedrhin said the matter was now behind them.

He said the party has begun mobilising its election machinery and engaging with voters in Sabah, with PBM eyeing at least two state seats.

Earlier, Star Media Group chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng briefed the PBM delegation on the group’s editorial operations and on the national media landscape.

PBM was originally founded as the Sarawak Workers Party in 2012 before rebranding to its current name in 2021.
