Over RM26mil in illegal alcohol seized in Sarawak raids


PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman seized thousands of cartons of illegal alcohol worth over RM26mil during raids in Sarawak.

On Saturday (July 4), Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, in a statement, said that a special operation in Sarawak was conducted on July 3 by the department’s Wildlife Crime Bureau / Special Investigation Intelligence.

“During a raid on a premises in Kuching, the police also arrested three Indonesian men, all aged around 35 years old,” he said.

Over 75,000 cartons of untaxed alcohol were found on site, including three shipping containers full of illegal booze.

“The total value of the seizures is estimated at RM26,624,618.

“This operation is a part of the police’s ongoing commitment to strengthening enforcement against the smuggling and illegal diversion of untaxed goods. This activity not only results in significant losses to government revenue but it also has the potential to fuel transnational crime, threaten national security as well as public order,” he said.

In a related matter, Comm Mohd Yusri said that a total of 199 raids had been carried out between Jan 1 and July 4.

The raids led to 375 people arrested for various offences, including smuggling and illegal e-waste operations.

“During this period, the department recorded around RM258,518,030 in total seizures,” he said.
