Malaysian delegation pays respects to Khamenei

KUALA LUMPUR: Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu (pic) led the Malaysian government delegation in paying final respects to the late former Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, at the Grand Mosalla in Teheran.

In a Facebook post, Mohamad said the mourning ceremonies would take place over several days, beginning in Teheran before continuing to Qom, Najaf and Karbala, prior to the remains being taken to the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad for burial on July 9.

He said the tribute and mourning ceremonies were being held more than 100 days after Khamenei was killed in an attack involving the United States and Israel on Feb 28, Bernama reported.

“The final respect for the late former Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, at the Grand Mosalla has just concluded.

“Upon my arrival, I was welcomed by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi,” he said yesterday.

Iranian authorities have announced public closures and airspace restrictions in Teheran and Mashhad on key dates, with July 9 declared a national day of mourning.
