KUALA LUMPUR: Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu will represent Malaysia at the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran Friday (July 3).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he had been invited to attend the ceremony but was unable to do so because of prior commitments.
“For Khamenei’s funeral in Tehran tomorrow, we are sending our agriculture minister to represent the country,” he said at the 39th Asia-Pacific Roundtable here on Thursday (July 2).
Khamenei, a spiritual figure for many Shia Muslims, died at the age of 86 at his compound in central Tehran on Feb 28.
His son, Mojtaba, succeeded him as supreme leader in early March, becoming the third to lead the Islamic republic since its establishment in 1979.
The funeral, initially scheduled for March but postponed due to the war, will now take place across several cities, beginning with three days of ceremonies in Tehran from July 4, followed by a service in Qom on July 7 and burial in his hometown of Mashhad.
