Bandar Perda sinkhole believed to have been caused by leak in IWK sewerage system

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A road subsidence or sinkhole incident on the road in front of a bank in Bandar Perda here Thursday (Oct 22), which went viral on social media, is suspected to have stemmed from a leak in the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) sewerage system.

Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai (MBSP) mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said the local authority received a complaint regarding the incident at about 2:30pm before immediate action was taken by installing barriers and safety tape at the location to ensure the safety of road users.

"Initial investigations by MBSP found that the incident likely originated from an IWK sewerage system leak (in that area). The complaint has also been referred to IWK, and IWK is currently conducting further investigations, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera tests, to identify the actual cause and subsequent repair actions," he said when contacted Thursday night.

He added that follow-up action, including necessary repair works, will be decided based on the results of the investigation, and road users are advised to be cautious when passing through the area throughout the investigation period.

Earlier, a video and several photographs went viral showing a sinkhole on the road in front of a bank in Bandar Perda, causing public anxiety over fears that it could grow larger if immediate action was not taken. - Bernama
