KOTA KINABALU: A total of 4,159 people remained at relief centres in four flood-hit Sabah districts as some areas report slight improvement amid continuing evacuations.
A statement by the Sabah Disaster Management Committee said a total of 1,362 families from 43 villages remained at relief centres in the four flood-hit districts as of 4pm Monday (Mar 10).
A total of 24 relief centres are operating in Beaufort, Membakut, Sook and Tenom following rains in Sabah's south western Beaufort and interior Keningau district since Mar 7.
Keningau shut down two relief centres where 100 evacuees from two kampungs were allowed home at 3pm (March 10).
However, the number of evacuees in neighbouring Tenom district increased with a total 1,162 people; 435 involving families from 16 villages were now staying at temporary relief centres.
Membakut also saw an increase in evacuees, with a total of 880 people involving 295 families from 10 villages currently in shelters.
There was no increase in evacuees in Beaufort with 1,330 people involving 432 families and interior Sook with 778 people involving 200 families from five villages.
Beaufort and Membakut are low-lying flood-prone coastal districts and are often hit by floods when heavy rains occur in the Crocker Range in Sabah's interior Tenom and Keningau districts.
