15 women among 70 vying for CEC seats

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifteen women are among the 70 candidates seeking to be elected to the DAP central executive committee (CEC).

Only 30 members will be elected to serve on the party’s highest decision-making body, for the 2025-2028 term, national organising secretary Steven Sim (pic) told a press conference at the party’s headquarters yesterday.

Many of the women are high-profile politicians including Lim Hui Ying, Yeo Bee Yin, Hannah Yeoh, Teo Nie Ching, Teresa Kok, Nicole Tan Lee Koon, Young Syefura Othman and Kasthuriraani Patto.

The others are Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, Leng Chau Yen, Phee Syn Tze, Tiew Way Keng, Vivian Wong, Wong Shu Qi and Liow Cai Tung.

The big names among the men include Hui Ying’s brother Guan Eng, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and brothers Ramkarpal Singh and Gobind Singh Deo.

Steven Sim will also be a contender, along with party secretary-general Anthony Loke and vice-chairman Nga Kor Ming.

The party’s 18th national congress will be held on March 16, with 4,203 delegates set to cast their votes at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to be in attendance.

The election process will be monitored and conducted by an independent third party, according to Sim.

“I’m confident that the election will be clean, fair and transparent,” he added.

No candidates were disqualified from running, but there were a few voluntary withdrawals in the process.
