MCA 76th: Existing seat allocation model within unity govt not favourable for MCA's survival

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA is currently facing a seat dilemma within the unity government as the existing seat allocation model is not the right path for MCA’s survival, says party secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon.

“If we follow the pattern of past state and by-elections, where the winner gets the seat, MCA is expected to secure only two parliamentary and seven state seats. Even in the best-case scenario, we may gain just a few more seats. This is not a viable long-term solution for MCA.”

“We cannot wait for others to hand us seats; we must take the initiative and actively work to regain the support of the Chinese community.

“This is not only the way forward for MCA but also the Chinese community. Only by doing this can MCA break out of its current predicament and create a new future for all,” he said during MCA’s 76th anniversary celebration at Wisma MCA on Saturday (March 1).

In the 15th General Election, MCA won two parliamentary seats: Ayer Hitam, which was secured by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, and Tanjung Piai, won by vice-president Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng.

For the state seats, Choong Shin Heng won in Chenderiang, while Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem emerged victorious in Machap Jaya. Datuk Lim Ban Hong secured Kelebang, Tan Chong won in Bekok, Ling Tian Soon claimed Yong Peng, and Lee Ting Han triumphed in Paloh. Tan Eng Meng won the state seat of Pekan Nanas.

He stressed that only by upholding the spirit of perseverance and strength can MCA reshape the political landscape, win public support, and bring new hope to both the nation and the Chinese community.

“To become the people’s choice, the key lies within MCA itself. We must actively engage with the rakyat, demonstrate our capabilities, take responsibility, and uphold our values.

"The people must see MCA’s efforts, believe in our sincerity, and ultimately entrust us with the future of the country,” he said.
